The ability to leap and jump higher is one of the most important attributes of a basketball player and here are a few tips to show how that level of athleticism can be achieved. The ability to jump higher definitely gives an edge to the basketball player and this can be done by practicing to take a step or two before actually jumping. These pre-jumping steps help provide extra energy necessary for that additional upward lift. Positioning the body correctly is another important aspect if the basketball player wants to jump extra high.

The knees should be bent at 60 degrees, the hips should be flexed at 30 degrees and the ankles should be turned at 25 degrees. This positioning gives that extra momentum to the jump without causing injury to the knees or ankles. The posture of the knees is vital in achieving that amazing leap. The knees should never face inwards as this can cause serious damage to the knee joints.

Also, the player should practice landing on the balls of the feet and gradually shift the weight to the heels. This ensures that the impact of landing does not affect the kneecaps adversely. Hands should be kept sideways while executing the jump and swinging the arms skywards will provide that additional momentum to jump higher. Also, the breathing technique should be correct; breathing out while in motion will help propel the body upwards higher. Jumping high needs strong muscles as the movement depends on the strength and contraction of the muscles. The swifter the muscles contract, the higher the player can jump. To this effect, plyometrics is an excellent training method as it improves the functions of the nervous system and makes the muscles stronger. Squats and jogging also help in strengthening muscles which are necessary for achieving that high jump.
